UTM 5, a High-performance ISP Billing System

UTM 5 is an ISP billing system perfect for real-time usage-based billing (metered Internet access). The software can directly interface with networking equipment to collect usage statistics and to control Internet access in real time. The billing system supports charging per traffic volume as well as per connection time.

The core of the billing system, written in C++, is a smart and reliable engine working directly with networking equipment. It supports up to 100,000 users at a total bandwidth of up to 3 Gbps.

UTM can be used in almost any ISP solutions: leased line billing, DSL (ADSL) billing, dial-up Internet billing, Hotspot billing, VoIP billing, PBX billing, etc.

UTM is certified by the Russian Federation Ministry of Communications as a reliable and accurate ISP billing system.

UTM 5 consists of the following modules:

Basic Module is the basic billing system package. It includes the billing system Core, Netflow collector, Remote Firewall Management module, Administration Control Center, Customer Web Portal, etc. Basic Module is enough to deploy a billing solution with resident subscribers having static IP addresses.

NetUP RADIUS Server is used for VPN, PPPoE and dial-up connections authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA). Additionally, instead of RADIUS accounting it can be used the Netflow method, that has numerous advantages.

DynaShape is a module for dynamic bandwidth shaping. Dynamic bandwidth shaping is popular with flat rates to make them more profitable for an ISP. The subscriber's bandwidth dynamically depends on the Internet traffic volume consumed.

The module is intended for automatic registration of subscribers using prepaid scratch cards. Internet access can be metered either per traffic volume or per connection time. IP addresses are given by a DHCP server.

The Telephony Module includes NetUP RADIUS server and a CDR parser. UTM 5 with the Telephony Module is capable of both Internet access & VoIP billing, and can be used by a VoIP service provider as well as by an ISP to expand the range of provided services. The RADIUS server is compatible with a large number of popular VoIP Gatekeepers/Gateways. If RADIUS is not supported by the VoIP gateway, statistics can be collected using the CDR parser.

Telephone directions, zones and time ranges allow a provider to set various call rates (mobile phones, local phones, national calls, international calls, night-time calls, free thresholds, etc).

We have contributed to the Open Source software development effort and Linux OS popularization with release of the following free applications:

NDSAD (NetUP Data Stream Accounting Daemon) is a traffic probe. Originally developed by NetUP, NDSAD is an open-source (GPL'ed) tool that captures packets and generates a Netflow (v5) statistics stream. It can be used for the ISP billing system UTM 5 or for any other Netflow software collecting Netflow.

Get-XYZ is a universal traffic probe and Netflow v5 converter for Mikrotik, NSG and Revolution network hardware. As well as NDSAD, Get-XYZ was originally developed by NetUP, and now it is an opensource (GPL'ed) project.

NetUP Linux Live CD is a bootable compact disk with self-configuring Linux (Knoppix) and installed over it UTM-based billing server. Live CD is absolutely free.
